Paper Mario The Origami King is an all-new game in the paper craft role-playing game series, which will launch for Switch on 17th July. Nintendo’s 2D hero has a new ability, 1000-Fold Arms, a kind of stretchy arm tactic that lets you interact with scenery, revealing hidden areas and new puzzles
Paper Mario The Origami King just got a nice boost as it was announced on Switch this coming July. The game will features “a detail-rich world” to explore, “off-the-wall” mini-game events and “countless mysteries” to be solved, according to Nintendo.
The Paper Mario series debuted on the N64 and has differed from the main series with a focus on comedy and the occasional RPG spinoff. The Paper Mario Origami King looks to fit firmly in that classic Paper Mario style, complete with charming paper craft art and far too many puns. The game also includes what Nintendo describes as “a new ring-based battle system that lets you flex your puzzle-solving skills to line up scattered enemies and maximize damage.
The story looks like it’ll revolve around trying to liberate Princess Peach’s castle from a new paper-based menace called King Olly, who, according to Nintendo’s press release, wants to “fold the entire world.” Exploration will be based on a new ability called “1000-Fold Arms” in which Mario extends his appendages in weird ways to solve puzzles and navigate environments. It sounds like you’ll be able to team up with a few allies at various points as well, including Bowser.
Nintendo has had Directs specifically for Pokemon and Animal Crossing this year, but none laying out its more general plans for the coming year. As a result, the back half of the Switch’s 2020 release calendar is looking sparse. Paper Mario The Origami King will certainly help fill that gap a bit.
